Striaight Outta Compton Movie Review

Last night I went to check out ‘Straight Outta compton’ I wasn’t really sure what to expect of the film, I’m not going to lie I am not super familiar with the genre or the storyline of the film.

I think it is important to go to this film with a brief understanding of the plot. While it isn’t essential I definitely think it will enhance your experience if you do know the back story before seeing it.

In 1988, a groundbreaking new group revolutionises music and pop culture, changing and influencing hip-hop forever. N.W.A’s first studio album, “Straight Outta Compton,” stirs controversy with its brutally honest depiction of life in Southern Los Angeles. With guidance from veteran manager Jerry Heller, band members Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren navigate their way through the industry, acquiring fame, fortune and a place in history.

It is amazing how they found actors who looked so similar to the characters they were playing. The actor that played Snoop Dogg didn’t look that similar but the rest of them were almost spot on. Ice Cube’s son played his character so the resemblance is near perfect.

The movie is extremely well done in the way that it includes but doesn’t glorify gang culture. It is educational in the sense that the police were cracking down on them simply because of their skin colour. The movie dealt a lot with equality issues, the struggles N.W.A went through, their rise, struggles with management and the loss of Eazy-E. The movie definitely makes you appreciate the genre and the hard times early artists had to endure just to create their music.

The thing I find most interesting about the movie is that after it’s release the number of searches for N.W.A increased by 24 times. The Spotify station was played 702% more than prior to the release. People now see how influential these guys have been on the hip hop industry. It’s definitely an inspiring story, when all the ods were against them they still managed to make something of the music they were making.

‘Straight Outta Compton’ made $60 Million US Dollars in it’s opening weekend. With a rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes this is definitely a film you need to see.
