Sleep Our Saviour

Sleep is one of the most frustrating things in existence. The thing that frustrates me most about sleeping is the fact that I feel like I could be getting things done when I am sleeping. The only issue is with a lack of sleep comes tiredness and with tiredness comes a lack of performance. You’re probably sitting there thinking yes Cam I get it. I need to go to bed earlier, what ever I have stuff to do. It’s only in the last week that I have realised just how important sleep is and how much it effects life and what you’re capable of.

There will always be times when you can’t sleep as much as you would like to and I guess in those situations you just have to make the most of what you’ve got and sleep when you can. For those times when you’ve got an extra few minutes I suggest taking a power nap. 30 – 60 minutes is about all you need. Anything more than 60 minutes is dangerous because you will fall into a deep sleep and it will be more difficult to wake up. If you sleep too long it will just leave you feeling drowsy for the rest of the day.

My new week resolution is to get more sleep. Last week I don’t feel as though I was performing to my best in terms of work and I would like to progress this week and feel like I am achieving something. It is hard for me to get a decent night sleep sometimes. Coming off the radio show I find it difficult to go to sleep right away because I am still hyped up. 6am isn’t super early for most people but I really am not a morning person and waking up at that time can occasionally be a struggle. Anyway what I am trying to say is I am scheduling my time this week to ensure I have time during the day especially mid-late week. Wednesday Thursday and Friday are the days I begin to feel a bit tired and lethargic. To get around this I am going to get up at 6, after I finish at Breakfast I am going to go to the gym get the blood pumping, come home do some chores and nap in the afternoon before I have to go in and do radio.

Find what works for you, we all have such busy lives and different schedules so just find a time that suits you, or try to go to bed an hour earlier if you can’t take a nap during the day. Ideally it would be nice to make it through the week without having to nap but when your mind is in overdrive it doesn’t always work out that way.
