The Hunger Games Mocking Jay Part 1 Review

The wait is over ‘The Hunger Games Mocking Jay Part 1’ is finally here!

I was lucky enough to attend the New Zealand premier of the first part of Mocking Jay and it wasn’t disappointing. Personally I am not a reader so I haven’t read any of the Hunger Games movies and had no idea what to expect from the storyline or plot. From what I was told a lot of this movie could have been condensed to make just one film however director Francis Lawrence decided the movie world be broken into two parts. It is somewhat frustrating having to wait another year to get the second part of the film. I would rather skip some of the less important material so that the film could fit into one part. The first part almost seems like a waste of time. I am in no way saying this is a bad movie because it is far from that I just feel that it could have been condensed a lot.

Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence). Where do you even begin. Her performance was so convincing and real I can’t imagine that character being played by anyone else and I just don’t think the movie would have been the same without her. Jennifer is natural talent. She works extremely hard but remains humble. Her ability to transfer from her own life and portray a character is out of this world. She is so believable and really does tug at your heart strings multiple times throughout the film.

Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) has lost a lot of weight for the film. While his characters mental health is being questioned the gauntness of his face is hard to look at. It adds to the ordeal his character is going through but definitely does make you feel uneasy watching.

Gale (Liam Hemsworth) is my second favourite character after Katniss he is so selfless and always tries to do what he can for Katniss. He risks his own life to try and do what is right by her. Gale seems like the kind of guy everyone would want to be friends with.

The soundtrack is great Lorde curated the soundtrack and did an astounding job making sure the music was a perfect fit to the on screen action. I was waiting to hear Yellow Flicker beat through out the film but you will have to wait for the credits to hear it. I think the main thing with the soundtrack is that it fit so well with the movie that you didn’t always notice it. When watching a film you don’t want the music to over power the action that is happening on screen. Lorde has effectively evoked emotion and portrayed the action through music the visual and musical tracks compliment each other perfectly.

Expect a movie that is action packed but like any movie that is split in two parts expect to be frustrated when the movie finishes. If I wasn’t so curious to see the first film I would definitely wait until the day before Part 2 comes out that way you’d only have to wait a day to see Mocking Jay in it’s entirety. It is a must see movie though so let me know what you think when you get to see it.
