The Huntsman: Winter’s War Review

I was super excited to see The Huntsman: Winter’s War but found it somewhat underwhelming. I feel like the storyline is what let it down. Whiel it’s not exactly a difficult storyline to follow I couldn’t help but wonder what is the point. The plot definitely dragged in some places and while I’m not the biggest fan of these fairytale fantasy movies I will give credit where due. The cast and consuming in this film make it what it is
Betrayed by her evil sister Ravenna (Charlize Theron), heartbroken Freya (Emily Blunt) retreats to a northern kingdom to raise an army of huntsmen as her protectors. Gifted with the ability to freeze her enemies in ice, Freya teaches her young soldiers to never fall in love. When Eric (Chris Hemsworth) and fellow warrior Sara defy this rule, the angry queen does whatever she can to stop them. As war between the siblings escalates, Eric and Sara unite with Freya to end Ravenna’s wicked reign.
The cast is incredible for the girls who like boys and the boys who like boys Chris Hemsworth is the eye candy to rule all eye candy… The only down side is you don’t get to see too much flesh in this film. Both Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt are incredible in their roles. Charlize is particularly dark and mysterious which is incredible to watch all the while making you feel extremely uncomfortable. Her character shows no mercy and provides the film with a real sense of evil. I think one of the things I find difficult about fairytale fantasy movies is the fact you can’t really relate to the characters. Firstly the have superpowers and secondly they’re so dark and evil. I don’t know about you but I’m not really setting out each day to be dark and evil. Don’t get me wrong all of these actors are incredible at what they do and I commend them on their abilities to portray such vivid characters but there was a definite lack of connection which is what I enjoy so much about watching movies.
The costuming on the other hand was a massive redemption. The dresses worn by Ravenna and Freya are stunning. They had so much intricate detail. The costume in conjunction with pristine make up really gave the film an epic sense. If you’ve seen Maleficent you will understand what I mean when I say the costumes made the film. While there is a plot and it’s easy to understand and follow there are just some parts of the film the drag along and it gets a little boring. I did find zoning in and out only to be impressed by the numerous costumes and costume changes especially in the case of Freya.
If you’re the kind of person who loves fairytale fantasy movies then you will no doubt enjoy this film. If you’re not such a fan I would suggest waiting to see this one on DVD. It’s definitely worth a watch even to see the incredible costuming and the detail of the weapons. But I wouldn’t go into the cinema expecting that it is going to be the best movie you’ve ever seen.
I rate the movie 6/10 just because the costumes were so impressive.
