Melissa McCarthy is back with the hilarious new comedy The Boss. No matter what kind of comedy you like you’re guaranteed to love this hilariously inappropriate movie. I like the fact that the humour in this film is clever. Yes there are penis jokes and they are immature but there is more depth to the humour than just body parts.
Wealthy mogul Michelle Darnell (Melissa McCarthy) always gets her way, until she’s busted for insider trading and sent to federal prison. After leaving jail, Darnell finds herself broke, homeless and hated. Luckily, she tracks down former assistant Claire (Kristen Bell), the only person who’s willing to help. While staying with Claire and her young daughter, the ex-con devises a new business model for a Brownie empire. Unfortunately, some old enemies stand in the way of her return to the top.
Melissa McCarthy is the perfect actress to play the character Michelle. She is the perfect combination of sassy, fierce, feminine mogul with a hearty dose of mongrel, ballsy, bad ass. She completely owns the character. The thing I love about Melissa is that a lot of her films involve an extreme side. In this film the sword fighting scenes push her boundaries. She puts herself out there and isn’t afraid to pack a punch when need be. The contrast in her character provides a platform to create humour. On one side you have this prim and proper multi billionaire on the other side you’ve got an insane potentially insane lady who pulls out all the stops on her climb back to the top.
While you can’t really relate to Michelle because she is quite far removed from normality you definitely feel a sense of camaraderie with Claire. She is just trying to do the best for her daughter and make her way in life. For the majority of the movie you’re hoping that Michelle does the right thing by Claire but you just can’t hate Michelle because her character is the catalyst for the humour in the movie.
It provides a good laugh I definitely recommend it and overall it’s an 8/10.
